Why Asha Bhosle Still Reigns as My Numero Uno in Bollywood

Asha Bhosle has been my undisputed numero uno singer in the Hindi Film industry from childhood. That opinion has not changed to date.

While the majority thought the “Nightingale of India” i.e. Lata Mangeshwar was Hindi Cinema’s greatest of all time, I could never accept the popular perception. Yes, with all due, humble request, Lata ji had a golden voice, she didn’t care about the versatility and longevity of Asha Bhosle’s voice. Someone wise said, “It’s not how you start, it’s how you end.”

Time has proven Asha Bhosle could sing a wide variety of songs that suited most actresses, that magically fired up the chemistry with the actors. While Lata Mangeshkar’s voice took a hit with age, Asha Bhosle’s voice somehow managed to carry the same youthfulness until her end.

And as for the “Nightingale of India” logic for being the number one, I’d respectfully argue, who wants to be a nightingale, when you can be all the birds in the kingdom and have a literal ball? Like Asha Bhosle did in her career, and her die-hard fans like me will vouch for it.

Don’t believe me? You don’t have to. Let’s Asha Bhosle’s voice do the talking now.

Tera Dil Kahan Hai Sab Kuchh Yahan Hai—Chandni Chowk

One of Asha’s early gems, this light-hearted, breezy romantic number feels youthful, peaceful, and brings a smile on your face.

Aaiye Meherbaan—Howrah Bridge

A smooth, seductive invitation picturised on the beautiful Madhubala, Asha Bhosle sounds effortlessly confident and charming.

Yeh Raaten Yeh Mausam—Dilli Ka Thug

A dreamy, romantic classic song makes it your perfect  late-night listening with its moonlit mood and gentle melody.

Bhanwara Bada Nadaan—Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam

Like a naïve bee drawn to a distant bloom, the song captures the innocence of longing and the ache of unspoken love. Asha’s voice gives it such depth and grace, while being laced with playfulness.

Abhi Na Jao Chhod Kar—Baat Ek Raat Ki

Passionate, earnest, and sung with incredible chemistry, this song will surely melt your heart.

Ab Ke Baras Bhej—Bandini

Melancholy SD Burman gem sung by Asha Bhosle (lyrics: Shailendra), picturized on Nutan as a prisoner yearning for home and lost innocence.

From Bandini, Ab Ke Baras Bhejo Bhaiya Ko Babul reveals Asha Bhosle in a rare, deeply emotive space.

Her voice carries a poignant longing and quiet ache, evoking the tender pull of home and separation.

Aankhon Se Jo Utri Hai—Phir Wohi Dil Laya Hoon

A gentle descent of love from glance to soul, Asha’s tender, wise, silken voice turns it into a quiet confession, where unspoken emotions softly find their home in the heart.

Thodi Der Ke Liye Mere Ho Jao—Akeli Mat Jaiyo

Sweet and playfully romantic, the song is  a simple request to stay a little longer. Asha’s charming voice is its perfect suitor.

Shokh Nazar Ki Bijliyaan—Woh Kaun Thi

Asha Bhosle’s voice sparkles with a fun, flirty, mischievous energy.

Aage Bhi Jaane Na Tu—Waqt

This is Asha Bhosle at her finest, most evocative voice that carries a rare blend of introspection, warmth, and wisdom on life’s fleeting moments. Aage Bhi Jaane Na Tu stands out for its simplicity, profound depth, and immense grace.

Ye Hai Reshmi Zulfon Ka Andhera—Mere Sanam

Asha Bhosle matches Mumtaz’ vibe with her seductive and mysterious voice. This is pure, unadulterated Bollywood 60s glamour.

Paan Khaye Saiyan Hamaro—Teesri Kasam

Waheeda Rehman bursts in Asha Bhosle’s earthy vibrance playing the nautanki dancer who teases her beloved playfully. Asha playful rustic charm and rhythmic folk-infused flair, makes this song lively and unforgettable.

Jhoomka Gira Re—Mera Saaya

Asha Bhosle is at her playful best here, and perfectly complements Sadhana’s lively and feminine performance. A treat to hear and watch.

Garibo Ki Suno—Dus Lakh

In “Garibo Ki Suno”, Asha Bhosle moves you with sincerity and compassion in this heartfelt emotional plea—to be empathetic to the poor and downtrodden of our society.

Parde Mein Rehne Do—Shikar

Asha Bhosle’s playful teasing allure and her irresistibly lively voice picturised on the expressive Asha Parekh makes this a must in this playlist.

Aao Huzoor Tumko—Kismat

Another of my favourite songs, Asha Bhosle lend a vivacious, glamorous personality to the lead heroines like no other. I can’t imagine any other singer doing justice to Babita’s ditsy, starry-eyed performance.

Zindagi Ittefaq Hai—Aadmi Aur Insaan

A cinematic video picturised on the mesmerising Mumtaz, Asha Bhosle comes with a breezy, philosophical view of life’s unpredictability.

Piya Tu Ab To Aaja—Caravan

I’m pretty sure this song spurred many parents to name their girl child “Monica” in the country. This is hands down Bollywood’s ultimate cabaret song, this legendary song is pure unbridled energy and charm.

Daiya Yeh Main Kahan Phasi—Caravan

A playful complaint about being trapped in love, this super-catchy song is ably performed by the Asha duo.

Dum Maro Dum—Hare Rama Hare Krishna

Another solid favourite for this hippie vibes, Asha Bhosle’s voice is relaxed and powerful at the same time. It became a cultural phenomenon. This brings back happy memories of performing as Zeenat Aman to this song in my early twenties. The best part? It was an extempore group performance, and yet it all came together so beautifully coz’ we were all good dancers.

Aao Na Gale Lag Jao Na—Mere Jeevan Saathi

Asha Bhosle is warm and affectionate as her voice is a tempting invitation to come closer in this romantic number.

Bechara Dil Kya Kare—Khushboo

Asha Bhosle’s soulful voice and Gulzar’s poignant lyrics captures unrequited or separated love with deep melancholy and poetic beauty. The “helpless heart” yearns for union but faces the impermanence of life. Gulzar’s lyrics blend folk imagery, monsoon romance tropes, and spiritual metaphors, making it timeless and versatile.

Lekar Hum Deewana Dil—Yaadon Ki Baaraat

This song is the epitome of fun, carefree, youthful romance. Pancham da’s bouncy composition and catchy rhythm makes it an evergreen Bollywood party favourite.

I’ve always loved Neetu Singh onscreen as a child. She was beautiful, charming, and modern. She’s still ‘got it’ as she approaches her seventies. I also loved the whole western vibe of the new-age Bollywood lead heroine in the 70s with Zeenat Aman, Parveen Babi, and Neetu Singh. They erased the rigid line between the heroine and vamp effortlessly in Bollywood pop culture with their pointy stiletto.

Chura Liya Hai Tumne Jo Dil Ko—Yaadon Ki Baaraat

Are you even an Asha Bhosle and Zeenat Aman fan if you don’t dig this classy, iconic number? Zeenat Aman keeps it elegant and stylish while Asha Bhosle works her magic like no other in this romantic song.

Yeh Ladka Haye Allah—Hum Kisise Kum Nahin

Asha Bhosle’s playful, teasing charm and Kajal Kiran’s lively, flirtatious energy make this song a joyful celebration of youthful romance.

Yeh Mera Dil Yaar Ka Diwana—Don

Another of my favourite songs by Asha Bhosle, who’s peppy, seductive, and iconic. It’s a treat to watch Helen seducing Amitabh Bachchan as Don, while grooving to the number.

Piya Baawri—Khoobsurat

“Piya Baawri” lets Asha Bhosle to showcase her classical finesse to the fullest. She does it with an expressive warmth that’s intimate and deeply soulful—fully embodying the baawri (crazy heroine) who’s pining for her lover.

Hamen Raston Ki Zaroorat Nahi Hai—Naram Garam

Asha renders a free-spirited, romantic declaration that love needs no map, path or direction with an easy spontaneity.

Dil Cheez Kya Hai—Umrao Jaan

A hauntingly beautiful ghazal, Asha Bhosle’s voice drips with elegance, longing, and quiet sensuality. One of her finest classical performances, every note is a delicate expression of love and surrender on the most graceful and ethereal Rekha.

Jawani Janeman—Namak Halaal

A dazzling celebration of youth and attitude, Parveen Babi charms in this foot-tapping cabaret number in a sparkly gold gownwhile Asha Bhosle sings with an irresistibly bold, seductive, and energetic voice.

Roj Roj Aankhon Tale—Jeeva

“Roz Roz Aankhon Tale” lets us see a softer side of Asha Bhosle as she relaxes into a mood of tender intimacy and lingering desire. A soft, dreamy romantic song picturised on Mandakini, Asha Bhosle’s voice feels both intimate and soothing.

A perfect tribute to long-standing romantic relationships, it beautifully captures and revels in the quiet joy of seeing your beloved every day, with a gentle, lingering charm.

Piya Tu Ab To Aaja—Leslee Lewis

The old classic song “Piya Tu Ab To Aaja” comes alive through Asha Bhosle’s same bold, sensuous voice that defined an era of cabaret music. Picturised on the gorgeous Sonali Bendre and reimagined by Leslee Lewis, it retains its smoky allure while adding a fresh, modern twist in the late 90s.

Raat Shabnami—Jaanam Samjha Karo

Lesle Lewis — Asha Bhosle. Smooth, modern, and sensual. Asha proved even in the late 90s she could deliver fresh, stylish numbers.

And The Melody Goes On…

This list is just the tip of the iceberg. There are many Asha Bhosle gems waiting to be discovered. What are your favourite Asha tai’s songs?
