Angels and Demons

Last night, I read this joke on one of the Watsapp groups (PS: God knows how much I hate them on most days but may God bless them as well especially on sick days like today.) The joke went something like this –

Ever since I was a child, I’ve always had a fear of someone under my bed at night. So I went to a shrink and told him.

“I’ve got problems. Every time I go to bed I think there is somebody under it. I’m scared. I think I’m going crazy.”

“Just put yourself in my hands for one year,” said the shrink.

“Come talk to me three times a week and we should be able to get rid of those fears.”

“How much do you charge?”

“Eighty dollars per visit,” replied the doctor.

“I’ll sleep on it,” I said.

Six months later the doctor met me on the street.

“Why didn’t you ever come to see me about those fears you were having?” he asked.

“Well, eighty bucks a visit three times a week for a year is an awful lot of money! A bartender cured me for $10. I was so happy to have saved all that money that I went and bought me a new pickup!”

“Is that so?” with an attitude he asked, “and how, may I ask, did a bartender cure you?

“He told me to cut the legs off the bed. – Ain’t nobody under there now!”

…..

The joke might frustrate some qualified psychiatrists or diehard ghost believers, but one cannot deny that it´s hilarious anyway.

Monsters are so ín´today in popular culture. Witches and Bitches are the new sassy cool. Bad is the new good. Mean is the new smart. Sarcasm is the new funny. Lies are the new truth. And, Selfishness has a good connotation to it finally.  It´s not just okay to be a monster today but also cool to be one. Think Trump or Hillary! (*Wicked grins*)

We are all monsters too. As for me, its ugly head surfaces every now and then. Every month for sure when Aunt Flo strikes but I try to push it back to its hellhole. Before all hell lets loose of course! The monsters in us make us realize that we are only human and perfectly capable of evil. Whether it is saying a white lie to the grossest crime, we are capable of going to the darkest depths of evil.

And, then we also realize that it is these monsters inside us with whom we wage our real battles. Monsters of self-doubt, fear, pride, anger, envy, sloth, greed, lust and more. But, we also realize that if there´s black within us, there´s also white! We are also angels in disguise provided we choose to tread the difficult narrow path of goodness. Angels of love, kindness, humility, peace, wisdom, tolerance and understanding.

Coming to real monsters and ghosts, do I believe in them? Like I said, there´s monsters all around including in ourselves. That is why, there are no perfect human beings. No perfect parents, offsprings, spouse, friends, coworkers or bosses. We´re all angels and demons in varying proportions.

Now, do I believe in the existence of supernatural ghosts and monsters? Like literally! I share the exact same sentiment as Rujuta Diwekar, India´s leading celebrity nutritionist and fitness coach. She reveals in one of her books how she believes in ghosts and this staunch belief stems from her grandfather whose logic was quite simple and straightforward –  Íf humans can exist, so too can ghosts!´
