One of my favorite things about dining at a Chinese Restaurant is their herbal teas. I look forward to sipping on warm Jasmine tea along with my food and after it.
At home, I replicate that snuggly feeling by sipping on warm green tea. It’s a divine ritual which makes me feel at Zen with the world at large.
While I’m away at work or leisure outside, I carry my own vacuum insulated Thermos travel mug. It works perfectly as my green tea detox bottle.
Green tea has gained popularity worldwide over the last decade. Originated from China, it is one of the most popular drinks around the world today.
Green tea is sourced from the leaves of Camellia sinensis and is blessed with immense health benefits. Since it does not undergo the oxidation process that is typically used to make Black Tea and Oolong Tea, it has more antioxidants and is a much healthier tea option.
It took me a while to perfect making green tea. It’s simple, and yet, you can go wrong by going overboard. In Hyderabad where I live, the Dum Chai (tea cooked on slow flame over a long period) is a staple. And, if you replicate that style of making chai to your green tea, it will literally leave a bitter taste in your mouth.
You want your green tea to roll in smooth over your tongue, and glide gently through your throat, leaving you with a delicate aftertaste.
You need to get the brewing right to ace making that perfect cup of green tea.
How to make the perfect cup of green tea?
Before explaining the step-by-step process, You need a 1:1 ratio of green tea leaves and water. So, 1 teaspoon of tea leaves to 1 cup of water. If you are using teabags, then it is 1 teabag per brewed cup.
Allow the green tea leaves steep in hot water for 2-3 minutes at the max. If you prefer a light texture and taste, reduce the steeping time. Above 3 minutes, and you will get the bitter aftertaste from the green tea.
You could use the regular strainer which you use for your daily ‘chai’ or choose from the many options in the market today which allow you to make tea on-the-go. You can buy a vacuum insulated Thermos (for carrying green tea while traveling).
How to make green tea in 5 Steps?
1. Take a cup of water and heat until it is about to boil.
2. Take a strainer. Measure and put 1 teaspoon of green tea leaves in it.
3. Pour hot water into the cup through the strainer, until the bottom part of the strainer is wholly immersed in hot water. If you are using a teabag, then dip the tea bag directly into the cup of water.
4. Remove the strainer or the teabag in 2-3 minutes. Take a sip to check if this is how strong you would like your green tea to be.
5. Steep again for 30 seconds if you feel the tea needs to be stronger.
Kudos! You have just made the perfect cup of green tea. Practice makes you perfect, and soon, you will be an expert in making green tea.
